Day 3, Paris, Chateau Vaux le Vicomte & Fountainbleau Palace
We begin our day with a leisurely drive out of the city to a little-known 17th century chateau east of Paris that is worth a visit, especially for history and literature buffs. The château was an influential work of architecture in mid-17th-century Europe and possesses a dramatic, colorful and sometimes turbulent history. The fabulous Castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte which inspired Louis XIV to build Versailles is a small, exquisite jewel. Its amazingly beautiful gardens rival even those of Versailles. The interior is lavishly furnished and gives the visitor a sense of intimacy and luxury. Chateau Vaux le Vicomte today is often chosen as a setting for period-piece films. The chateau's luxuriant formal gardens and fountains can provide repose from the hectic cityscape.
The next visit on today's jouney is Fontainebleau, a lovely historical town south of Paris. It is renowned for its large and scenic Forest of Fontainebleau, a favorite weekend getaway for Parisians, as well as for the historical Château de Fontainebleau of the kings of France, which attracts crowds of tourists.
Château de Fontainebleau is one of the most beautiful castles in France. Its interior decorations are especially interesting as a fine example of the French Renaissance style. At the same time, its historical significance is hard to overestimate, since it was the preferred residence of French kings and emperors for 7 centuries. After your visit to the main building, do not forget to take a stroll in the park and the gardens around the castle; you will see Diane's fountain and if you are lucky, meet one of the peacocks who live there.
Although by no means less interesting than the Versailles castle, the Fontainebleau castle is a bit more difficult to reach and less known to tourists.

Visit the historic city of Reims with its imposing Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO world heritage site, which has seen no fewer than 52 kings of France crowned within its walls. The city of Reims is also home to many of the most famed and prestigious Champagne houses, such as Mumm, La Veuve Cliquot, Krug or Ruinard.
You'll also visit Epernay, the capital of the Champagne region, which has over 100 km of tunnels dug into its chalk soil to accommodate the millions of bottles of maturing champagne. Visit Napoléon's apartments on the first floor, where you can see a lock of his hair & more. See the decor of the François I Gallery, one of the most beautiful galleries in France. View the Trinity Chapel, the King's bedroom & Throne Room - It's the only remaining Throne Room in France retaining its original furniture.
